about

YEAR 3.6

To my ears, this was the only 4-star (out of 5) track on the "Sine Language" album. It has such nice, rich, enveloping bass lines. I added some train sounds from the VIME (Vancouver Island Model Engineers, and did some of the usual real time looping, effects, etc. Made this in June this year (5 months ago) but didn't add it until now, maybe because I didn't put as many things into it as usual, or maybe I was unsure about the lengthy beginning that I added, using cue buttons triggering later parts in the song. Most won't notice the timing patterns in there, but I think it's length and apparent randomness builds anticipation for the song when it starts up.

There are parts in here (as in most of my edits) where the timing changes so much in such a short time that only the dancers and timing experts can be sure if the beat picks up where it would've been or in some new place, perhaps a half measure late, 2/3 a measure early, or some random fraction early and late at the same time. Again, unintended consequences is a great creative tool, and mines areas I'd probably never get to on my own. I played drums for 20 years, but never came up with half the beats I have found while doing looping within looping and other effects at the same time. So much fun. Thanks Mark System for the inspiring track.

My Description of the Raw Track in Numbers
9/10 smoothness
9/10 clarity and balance
5/10 wackiness
7/10 punch
8/10 exotic/otherworldly

All my edits have 5 things: Me, Others, Technology, Real Time Improvisation, and "Mistakes". I have been researching & playing with music intensely since 2011 on the Numark NS6. The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
