about

YEAR 3.1

"All Your Ears Can Hear" is a 2-disc local compilation of punk music on Vancouver island from the 70's-ish. Got it from the library. "Black Hole" is my favourite on the album. It's a nice, amusing tune with pretty cool lyrics. Had some fun with it and changed a few things, added a scream from Columbia sound effects, pitch bent to sound like a whistle here and there, "black-holish" effecting of the sounds at the end, etc.. I did a lot of playing with cue buttons on this track, with a few challenging bits (to listen to and understand, not to play; they happened because of my many broken cue buttons but i left them in because they're quite consistent and make the song more interesting after many listenings) that I call "skips" (two hits instead of one, very quick, that slips the timing, in this case, about a 32nd or 64th note (demisemiquaver or hemidemisemiquaver) note later). Playing cue buttons like this is very, very fun, but very, very hard, even for a drummer of 15 years, and lifetime finger tapper, because each hit is various length and at various starting point in measures and the buttons are harder to hit accurately at the slow speed required for their fragility--hence, the broken buttons haha.

lyrics

Somewhere in your ma-aind, there is a hole.
It's a black hole, like the ones in space.
Try to erase, time from space.
Why don't you just crawl in your hole,
And look at your face, haooo!
black hole
in space
Somewhere in your hea-ed, do you see red.
Lyin' in your bed, are you alive or dead (scream)
Try to erase, time from space.
Why don't you just crawl in your hole.

(cue drumming)

Try to erase, time from space,
Why don't you just crawl in your hole.
And look at your face.
Black Hole
In space
Somewhere in your mind, there is a hole.
There's a black hole, it's a black hole, like the ones in space.

All my edits have 5 things: Me, Others, Technology, Real Time Improvisation, and "Mistakes". I have been researching & playing with music intensely since 2011 on the Numark NS6. The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
