YEAR 1.12

This one came near the end of Year 1 for me. One day I wondered how many remakes there were for that song, "You Never Can Tell" as used in Pulp Fiction. Well, there are lots. I found my favorite 5 and set to the task of mixing them together. I almost gave up after a few different tries, then I decided to put them in order from least fave to fave (imo). Turned out this was also the order from lowest to highest beats per minute (all different). I decided to play the first bit of the first 4 and play the last one (my fave) all the way through. I needed to distract the listener from the increased bpm at the end of each track, while making it fairly smooth and appear novel but not too strange. There are various ways to do this. Each next song is introduced with 1 or more sound stabs played with cue buttons taken from the next song, played kind of like drum keys on a drum machine (but much harder to play. I played drum for 20 years and hand drumming all my life but am still learning to do this and getting more ways to create audio illusions with them). If you pay attention, you'll notice the intro teasers. The instruments in the first two ones (country versions) sound almost the same even though it's entirely different bands. The singer in the third one has an interesting accent (French Canadian?). C'est la vie and carpe diem !

All my edits have 5 things: Me, Others, Technology, Real Time Improvisation, and "Mistakes". I have been researching & playing with music intensely since 2011 on the Numark NS6. The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
