YEAR 3.12

Had the Men Without Hats album "Pop Goes the World" in my 20's. Loved almost every song on it. Something reminded me the other day and I decided I had to play with some of it. Got the title track with the newer vocals by their fantstic lead, known usually as simply "Ivan". In the same search another nice track came up, an edm one that sounded fun to play with (especially to liven up the cheesy vocals). I like to wonder if people can figure out the lyrics in the first verse, which is scrambled, before hearing it plain the second time. "I, will fee-ble fighting till I die." haha.

On the way home in the car I noticed they seemed very close to the same bpm (and therefore more flexible to mix with (more free hands to do things when both tracks are playing). Later I checked: they were 145 and 146 bpm. So this is my second try at putting these into a live edit. Done just now in two passes in real time. Made me laugh with musical joy 6 times when I played it back to myself the first time. Lost of new things in here for me. So happy about this one. And if you can tell the difference between the 2 or 3 "errors" and the 87 other changes I made, it won't make it any more or less enjoyable. It was the most fun I've had yet spinning and also the most fun listening to on first listen. Can't wait to play it on the upstairs tube amp, in my car, on the headphones, and on the Sound Hounds music system (haha, if they'd ever rent it out).

Notice that at the beginning, there are two decks playing the same intro and the timing is shifted *using the wheels) gradually, going from flanger, to delay, to repeater, manually. The mind adjusts by shifting from one timing it's familiar with to the next one it recognizes. From 4/4 to 3/4 to 2/3 to 2/4 for example.

9:13 almost zero to about 170 bpm, mostly 145/146

My favourite parts: 2:48--2:57 and 4:19--4:30 (the transition), 6:37--6:39 complex use of multiple effects and controls at the same time, and 5:30--5:55 (wacky cue stab playing to mess with the lyrics ?) 8:19--8:22
Near end of Year 3

Pop Goes the World by Men Without Hats 3:53 146 bpm
Walk on Water (Ultra DJ's Remix) by Basshunter 5:20 145 bpm
Finger-in-Cheek pop sound effect [my beloved brother (who might actually like the first part of this edit) absolutely cannot do the finger-in-cheek pop…either with his hand and my cheek, his cheek and my hand, or on his own;^]

If you listen to any music, knowing it might be beautiful, you will find beauty in it.

All my edits have 5 things: Me, Others, Technology, Real Time Improvisation, and "Mistakes". I have been researching & playing with music intensely since 2011 on the Numark NS6. The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
