about

YEAR 3.9

Sometimes I hunt for tracks the simple way (though it takes some time) by typing a word that interests me in music, like "punchy" or "balanced" for example. Then I choose my favorite among 5 or 10 of the suggestions, based on things like title, etc. Then I go to the "also bought" area and play 5 or 10 and pick my favorite again, and on it goes, until along the way I pick up a few great tracks.

"The Cooler" by Syncopix is one of those. Kind of Jungle/Drum and Bass with some very smooth sounds and beats. I start by showing every sixteenth of one of the measures, one sixteenth at a time (looping is the only way to stare at something in music). Through the song, I use looping to modify the beat here and there, some modified vocals, and some other effects. If you want to know for sure which parts are added or changed, you'll have to buy the original track.

The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
