about

Have been reading, thinking, and tongue-wagging with friends about the concept of free will lately. Threw it in there with some unplanned lyrics and "melody" lines haha. This one takes some respect. I mean it's 16 minutes, has some lengthy parts that build the mood into the next, and has a lot of complexity and subtelty and layers, more than even I knew when I made it. There are still surprises for me even on 20-some listenings. The beauty of these machines, the complex beauty of the sounds, and the ways they can be manipulated, along with the sequencers that let you do the work of 6 hands at once. These combine to make listening to music you made with your machine friends an almost magical audio "visual" experience.

Off-road music, as always. I painstakingly make the beats (including some of the wackier arrangements) but then when I set things up (levels, etc.) I just hit record and basically play the machines in real time like pianos or drums or commands to conductors. Expect perfection or excess squareness and you'll miss the brilliance.

lyrics

I like my lyrics rare, unplanned, and mysterious (nice word for raw levels with the over and under db volal bits, and unclear parts). You don't want to understand everything the first time. And sometimes the listener makes them up as they make sense in their head.

All my edits have 5 things: Me, Others, Technology, Real Time Improvisation, and "Mistakes". I have been researching & playing with music intensely since 2011 on the Numark NS6. The screen shot is a sound grab from Sunset Room in Victoria, BC, using an ipod app. I recommend playing these tracks quite loud and downloading the better quality files. Music is fragile; handle with care. ... more
